People love reading books for many reasons: the enjoyment of escaping reality, expanding their knowledge, and experiencing an emotional connection with characters and stories. Reading also offers relaxation, mental stimulation, and can foster a sense of belonging through shared reading experiences.
It comes as no surprise that one of our residents’ favourite hobbies at The Somerset Care Centre in Somerset West is reading. For that very reason, Sr. Gerda and her team started a library corner, which all our residents welcomed.

In honour of our new library corner, we decided to play with books.
Did you know that on 4 March 2022, as part of World Book Day, Blue Peter presenter Adam Beales knocked over 10 books domino-style in 16.19 seconds. The attempt was conducted live on the show, which first aired in 1958, and is the longest-running kids’ magazine TV programme. According to the Guinness World Records, it was the fastest time to set up and topple 10 books.
We rolled up our sleeves, took on the challenge, and our residents could give Adam Beales a run for his money. We even made six different types of Book towers. How’s that for a challenge? 😉

This is fun!

Tada!
