Mary Collins, a lively woman in her late sixties who’s run the Comrades Marathon more times than she can count, recently hit a bump in the road: She had to get a hip replacement. Going from being pretty independent to needing her family’s help was a big step and felt pretty overwhelming, really testing her resilience and sense of self. Losing the ability to do simple things like bathe and dress can be really tough on anyone. It’s common to feel frustrated, sad, and a bit worried about becoming a burden. Even small movements can feel tricky, and dealing with pain, trouble sleeping, and medication side effects can slow things down. It’s normal to feel anxious after surgery too, sometimes because of what you’ve gone through and feeling a bit isolated.

Mary’s husband and adult children do their best to be there for her, even though they have busy lives of their own. They juggle routines, hobbies, and sleep, all while managing the household, keeping track of medications, and making sure Mary is safe and comfortable at home. It’s a lot for everyone, especially as her kids balance work and their own families.

At Macadamia Care, we know how challenging it can be, and we believe no one should have to go through it alone.

Respite care is all about caring with compassion and a friendly touch. Unlike medical convalescent care, which mainly focuses on recovery, respite care is about everyday life and emotional well-being. It’s a thoughtful choice that cares about both the person recovering and the family taking care of them.

We’re here to support you for as long as you need.

Our services include:

• Help with recovery after illness

• Support during post-op recovery

• Cosy, full-board stays in a private room or care at home

• Full care if needed, for as long as it takes

• Social and spiritual activities to keep the spirits up

Respite care isn’t just a quick fix; it’s heartfelt support that’s super important for both the person receiving care and their family.

Respite Care is a lifeline of compassion and connection. It gives primary caregivers a chance to take a breather, relax, focus on their own health, or just unwind. Meanwhile, their loved ones get kind, respectful care in a warm, safe place.
